CHRISTI HUBLER CHEVROLET in CRAWFORDSVILLE, IN- Hello there!!!

About Us

Hello there! My name is Christi Hubler and I am delighted to be Crawfordsville’s newest business addition, as I was chosen to be Indiana’s next Chevrolet dealer. Coincidentally, I am sweeping that title from my very own brother. Exactly one year ago my brother Greg, of GREG HUBLER CHEVROLET, finalized his first dealership opportunity in Camby, Indiana. Greg and I happen to be of the fourth generation of automotive dealers from our mother’s side, and third generation from our father’s side. Our father Howard Hubler, held a 30 year tenure as general manager of the Hubler Automotive Group. I am proud to have this man not only as my father, but also as my partner. Together, we hope to make the community proud by serving happy customers for generations to come.

This father daughter duo, will have an exciting and up beat business partnership. Our workplace morale will reflect this, with the same pride and support we have for one another. We have high hopes for this adventure and our execution strategy is simple. To bring our greatest individual strengths to the table, and employ a motivated team to grow with. I have spent the majority of my career as a finance specialist. With four generations of lending relationships, and a fantastic program for even the most challenged of credit buyers, we want to earn your business. We also will be hiring right out of the gate, and hope that we can find some local individuals that want to be a part of our team!

Growing up, my family strived to make a positive impact in our community. To this day, our calendars stay booked with opportunities to engage, grow, and improve our neighborhoods. I laugh thinking about how easy it was back in the day…when we could all fit in one car! As our family has grown, so has our presence individually in our own communities. It is important to us to be a part of Crawfordsville and Montgomery County, as we now share the responsibility. We have always been active in supporting surrounding schools, churches, and local organizations. We are excited to do the same here as well!

In closing, I entered this business with one objective; I want to change the face of the automotive industry. We hope you will be a part of it and excited to watch, as we do just that! For starters, we will be expanding the dealership and updating it substantially. It is expensive, yet it is a requirement of the “General Motors Image”. As we roll out construction, please “pardon our dust” as we undergo this great remodel. Upon completion, it will be unrecognizable inside and out. I get chills just thinking about taking the second Crawfordsville exit off 74, and driving down 231 approaching the top of the hill where the dealership sits. I can see it now…two stories of windows sparkling like diamonds in the morning sunlight. The fresh asphalt hosts an array of colors reflecting off the windows…of perfectly lined up vehicles of all different sizes, just inviting you to stop in.

Do you see it? No? Well, come on by then…I’ll show you in person! 1705 Lafayette Road Crawfordsville, IN 47933 (Previous home of Horner Buick, GMC)

HUBLER HOOSIER HYSTERIA

October 27th, 2015

With six full months under our belt, so much has happened at Christi Hubler Chevrolet! Our staff has grown to approximately 30 total employees. We have sold 273 retail vehicles, plus dozens of miscellaneous others. Our sales count will likely increase before this article is even finished! We have raised a team of young energetic staff, and we have improved the job roles of those veteran employees who precede us.

I am very excited to elaborate on some of the most memorable moments of these past few months however, it will have to wait until my next post. I can only hope the memories written in text will come out as fulfilling as they have been to live. In the last 6 months, I have become the youngest female automotive dealer in the nation, planned a wedding, and became a wife and step-mother to two beautiful children. For the purposes of this article, I want to share a bit of myself and my personal history that I am ecstatic to bring to Crawfordsville in November. This article may be longer than most, but hopefully you will find it enjoyable!

Grandpa FrankIn the automotive community, Indiana folks usually have some familiarity with my father’s side of the family. The Hubler Automotive Group began in 1972 (see right photo, Franklin Hubler bottom left) when my paternal grandfather, Franklin Hubler, signed for his first Chevrolet dealership. My father entered into the car business shortly after the completion of his master’s degree from Indiana University. He was working on completing his doctorate in Bloomington when he received an unexpected phone call. My father says, “One day my Dad called me and said, our general manager just passed away from a heart attack. I am going to need your help. When can you be here?” And the rest was history. My dad was officially in the car business.

Chris Voltz MotorsOn a family dealer trip to Acapulco, Mexico, my father met a fellow dealer kid who was also from the good ‘ole Hoosier state of Indiana. Her name was Cindy Volz, and she was the daughter of Chris Volz II. Chris Volz Motors (see left photo) in Milan, Indiana was one of the first full-line GM dealers in the country. My great-grandfather, Chris Volz Senior, began his automotive career in the early to mid 1900’s. I know what you are thinking…man, enough with the history already! Here’s where it gets interesting.

On my first date with my (now) husband, we had the typical “getting to know you” chit-chat. We talked about our careers and some of our goals. I was 26 then and I told him that I wanted to own a dealership by the time I was 30. While on the automotive topic I mentioned that most people aren’t familiar with my mother’s side. My automotive ‘bloodlines’ so to speak are actually deeper on my maternal side, as I am of the fourth generation automotive dealer.

“I am sure you don’t know where Milan is, but that is where my mom is from,” I said. Before I could complete my sentence, Jason began telling me all about the story of Bobby Plump and ‘The Milan Miracle.’ Most people are familiar with a movie named Hoosiers that was based on this 1000 person town of Milan, Indiana. This quaint farm community was put on the map when their high school basketball team made their way to the state championship. Above all odds, these tiny but mighty men of Milan miraculously won! They defeated Muncie in the final seconds of the game as Bobby Plump took the final shot and made it!

I continued telling this “Hoosier Hysteria” of a fan, the story as I had been told. “That’s right! My grandpa had all of the players driven to ‘The Big City of Indianapolis’ (see right photo)  as they call it, in brand new 1954 Cadillacs,” I said. “I have been told the GM vehicle escort, was kind of thrown out there on a whim by my great-grand father knowing…winning state would likely never happen” [that’s a lot of gas, high risk insurance, and a lot of miles being put on brand new vehicles].

In “The Milan Miracle at 60” written by Mike Lopresti, he interviewed Bobby Plump and teammate Ray Craft in Hinkle Fieldhouse where they played that day. “Craft: I remember there were a thousand people yelling for Muncie, and 14,000 yelling for Milan. They understand what that night came to mean to their lives and appreciate the doors it opened, the state treasure they became, and perhaps the example of achievement it became in Milan. The stat Plump mentions is how 17 members of their senior class and nine of the 10 varsity players went to college.”

Jason proceeded to tell me in a matter of words how much he loved the story and all that it represents. “Growing up in Pittsburgh, I watched the movie Hoosiers and fell in love with Indiana basketball. Since we didn’t have an NBA team, we didn’t have that kind of a following for basketball. Years back, I was on a business trip and was going to be near Milan so I stopped by. I even went to Versailles (the county seat) to see the newspaper article from the day after they won state. I ended up buying a copy of it online, and have it framed at home,” he said. “You know what? Now that I think of it, on the second page there is a full paged advertisement for Chris Volz Motors.”

That was the conversation that changed our semi-business/semi-personal date into a real date. I mean, anyone that is a fan of Milan, is good in my book! Just months later on a date, we ran into the actor that played Jimmy Chitwood in the movie Hoosiers. It was almost like the initial connection of ours, was a reminder of our fate.

Milan Team with CarRecently my dad sent me an article from the Indianapolis Star called “The Milan Miracle,” written by Gregg Doyle. The bottom of the article had five pictures. To my complete surprise, one of them (see right photo) is of all the players sitting on top of a vehicle that reads Chris Volz Motors. I was astonished that of all of the pictures they could use, they used that one!

Just last month, my husband let me know that the Pacer’s would be wearing throwback “Old Hickory” jerseys for 6 home games this season. Now I am not usually a big sports fanatic, but it thrilled me that for once, I was as excited as he was about this unveiling. The throwback jerseys are to recognize Indiana basketball, and the cities in which its history stems. While I figured Milan would be mentioned, I would have never guessed that my city, Crawfordsville, would also be recognized! I had no idea, but Crawfordsville was actually the city that won the first Indiana state championship, and the first Indiana basketball game was played here as well!

With all of these random connections falling closer and closer to home, I decided I must go to some of these games! I was so thrilled to actually have ties to the history of this retro event, that we bought tickets to 10 of the games this season. Jason and I will go to the Crawfordsville night and the Milan night, and we will give the rest of the tickets away. This “tournament style” give-a-way will be to people who stop by and make baskets leading up to each of the games. We will start this in November, with more details to come.

With all of these strange flukes, I still keep finding out more! You see…my Crawfordsville Chevrolet dealership lies off state road 231 on a baseball diamond shaped lot, about 30 minutes south of Lafayette. Just by a complete coincidence, when you drive down the back road behind our lot for about 10 minutes, the town scenes from the movie Hoosiers were filmed right there! The movie also has a large number of residents from Crawfordsville and surrounding communities that played different parts in the movie. With all of these overwhelming ties to one another, I decided I wanted to try for something big.

Always shooting for the starts, I thought to myself…It would be really neat if I could get my grandpa and Bobby Plump to both come in to my dealership and reminisce about that day back in 1954. I decided to give it my best shot. I dial the number that might be able to point me in the right direction, and who answers on the second ring? “This is Bobby Plump how can I help you,” asks the voice on the other end? Where do I start, I thought? Well here goes nothing, and I began to blurt out whatever I could think of.

“Uggghh…Bobby, this is Christi Hubler. I haven’t since you since, well…I’ve been tall enough to see over a bar. But I am…I’m Chris Volz’s granddaughter and I…”

“What? You’re Chris Volz’s granddaughter,” asked Bobby excitedly? “Well my gosh, how is ‘ole Chris doing? It’s been a few years since I have seen him.”

We talked for a while and I explained to him all of these connections that I have to this story, that have grown into what now seems like fate. I told him the story of my 1st date with my (now) husband, and how it was so special due in large part to this Milan love of ours. I mentioned that on this very same date, for the first time I stated out loud my outrageous goal…to become the nation’s youngest female automotive dealer before the age of 30. I told Bobby how my father had taken me to his restaurant, Plump’s Last Shot in Broad Ripple, 15+ years ago. My dad took the women’s basketball team from Center Grove High School (my high school) to dinner after they won state. I told him that I now have a car dealership in Crawfordsville, IN. Of all the places my dealership could be, it is 10 minutes from where the town scenes in the movie were shot, and home of the first Indiana high school state basketball championship. I explained how incredible it was to hear that our NBA team is wearing throwback jerseys, and how I wanted to incorporate an event at the dealership to commemorate this fantastic bit of history.

I went on to ask the ultimate question, while explaining the reason for my call. “So…I guess what I was wondering…Is if maybe…Well, would there be a chance that you might be free on November 21st to come to the dealership and sign autographs?” After I got it all out, I think the 2 second pause about killed me! And then…

“WHY SURE,” said Bobby! “Do you think your grandpa might come too? It would be great to see him as well! You said your dealership is in Crawfordsville, right? My buddy Dick Haslam graduated from Crawfordsville in ’58 and then went on the play for Butler. Neat city! I will be in town on the 21st, so I would love to come. You tell me what time and I will be there.”

On November 21st at approximately 11:00 am, we will be kicking off our tournament style shooting contest for free Pacer tickets. We are honored to have Bobby Plump join us to sign autographs as we reminisce about all of his significant accomplishments for Indiana basketball.

License PlateThe movie Hoosiers represents so many things to so many people. For me, it’s overwhelming. It is the story of where I came from and part of how my parents met. It is a reminder of my husband and I having a mutual love for a tiny town. A tiny town that made a huge impact then and now, by bringing us together. For me as an entrepreneur, it is a constant reminder that the little gestures can go a long way! When it comes to me being a young woman in the car business, it keeps me focused on my ultimate goals…To change the harsh face of the automotive industry, to make a positive difference in the community, and to think outside the box on how to leave a lasting impression. And finally, just like that little team from Milan…to only shoot for the stars! Who knows? You just might make that final shot that changes it all.

Day 1, as The Nation’s Youngest Female Automotive Dealer at 27 Years-Old

Today I complete my first day as an automotive dealer. The last 24-hours went like this…

3/26/2015 5:35 PM

With my signature placed on the final document, I was the newest Chevrolet dealer in the state of Indiana. We are in an old conference room at now, my brand new dealership. It feels like an attic, with automotive sales and service manuals of numerous decades past. “So how does it feel,” the regional manager of Chevrolet asks? “Well, there is a lot to do…but I am ready to roll up my sleeves!” I had the two Chevrolet reps on either side of me with a grin, as they nodded and agreed with my father’s enthusiasm. My father, Howard Hubler, sat across from me grinning from ear to ear. He was able to make it for the last 15 minutes or so of the final signing. I felt like he kept “promoting” me, as if we were still in the application process. I thought to myself, hey Dad…there is no more ‘selling’ necessary.

It took me a moment to realize that it wasn’t just my father. It was almost as though all three of these extremely successful automotive men, are all expressing their pride in me. Maybe they too have daughters my age, or maybe they are always this enthusiastic to get one more dealer signed. Who knows? “We need to take a picture,” says the regional manager. I instinctively reached for my purse to gloss my lips for the photo opportunity, and forgot I had a question that went unanswered. “So wait a minute, I am the youngest female dealer in the nation right?” Both Chevrolet gentlemen glanced at one another with a smirk as one of them responded with, “Yes. By quite a bit actually…we are definitely making history here.”

I got a phone call before I hit the highway for my hour drive home. The gentlemen calling was my most direct Chevrolet rep, who was unable to attend due to prior engagements. He congratulated me, and said he had some good news. He continued with, “We got you signed in time to qualify for an exclusive meeting next week. It is on Thursday at the Indianapolis Speedway. We will be featuring the Indy 500 Pace Car for 2015, so make sure you ride with someone. There are 100 Limited Edition Camaros that are exclusively for our Central Indiana Chevy Dealers.” Now this is what I’m talking about, I thought. “Oh that sounds wonderful,” I responded trying to mask my excitement. “Do we get to drive one,” I asked as a rookie mistake. “Ha, yah you can drive one…,” he said. “…Out of the Speedway, and in to your driveway, or your dealership, or wherever you’d like!”

By this morning, the excitement had worn off slightly, and the anxiety of a full plate hit me. An advertising meeting from nine until one o’clock, then a blueprint meeting from one o’clock until four. I was so excited for these two meetings, because they finalized the “look” I we had been creating. The advertising as a whole and how our “image” is portrayed to the community, is of the utmost importance to me. With the finalization of the blueprints, we will put the last touches on the renovation of a beautiful and grand new building. My father’s friend Tony Alderson, of Alderson Construction in Indianapolis, has grown his development portfolio to do some of the largest commercial real estate properties, such as hospitals. One of his entry level jobs however, was my father’s home about 17 years ago.

After a long 24 hours, I spend yet another evening concluding my work at eleven o’clock at night. It is amazing to think that my father has been doing this for over 30 years. As I click the “send text” button to my father on hopefully the last ‘reminder text’ of the evening, I think of this amazing year that I have had. I am so blessed, and can’t wait to see what this next year will bring. I realize I must get my beauty sleep, as I have allowed myself a seven and a half hour window for wedding dress shopping in the morning.

THANK YOU CRAWFORDSVILLE! Here is an update on our status (part 2)…

Tuesday, April 14th, 2015

My father and business partner called me from Atlanta today inquiring about my progress for the day.

“Christi, I made it to Atlanta safe but I can’t seem to find part two.”

“Umm…I’m sorry Dad but I barely have two minutes. I have three sets of customers here shopping, and we might accidentally sell a car today. And what do you mean part two? What is it that you are looking for exactly?”

Really? I thought we wouldn’t be ready to sell until Wednesday at the earliest with the technology side of things? That’s great! Your blog thing. I read part one on Facebook, but can’t seem to find part two. What am I doing wrong?”

“Well, we’re doing the best with what we’ve got for now…We’ll see if we can get it contracted. You aren’t doing anything wrong, it hasn’t been written yet. I haven’t had the time. But wait a minute…you have a Facebook?”

I AM SO SORRY about the delay. Writing this blog has provided me tremendous insight to “my audience,” while also giving me mild stage fright as well. But I will continue on! Thank you all so much for your continued interest in our progress.

THE NEW PHONE NUMBER for Christi Hubler Chevrolet is 765-307-2900. With the phone line transition, there were some lost calls. I apologize for this, as our phone and fax lines should be straightened out at this time. As we installed these lines, our wireless internet speed should be top of the line. This necessity stems from the future technologies we will be implementing store wide. The use of tablet based processes will be integrated into our daily routine throughout the dealership. This is a costly decision that I have felt strongly about executing to provide our customers with a 2015 sales experience.

WE SOLD OUR FIRST CAR TODAY! Thank you so much Mr. and Mrs. McCloud for your patience with this transaction. We are now officially able to sell CHEVROLETs! While we do have inventory on the lot, a large majority is in transit and should gradually hit over the next few weeks. Please feel free to stop by and take a look at our inventory selection of approximately one of each model. Please keep in mind…IF WE DON’T HAVE IT WE WILL GET IT FOR YOU WITHIN 24 HOURS OR SO!

“A CUSTOMER FOR LIFE,” is what we are striving to make with every transaction. Because of that, I rescind my previous post of a 10 year OR 150,000 mile powertrain warranty. EVERY NEW CAR CUSTOMER will automatically get a LIFETIME powertrain warranty coverage! They will also receive 36 MONTHS OR 45,000 miles of NO COST MAINTENANCE! Our goal is simple…Creating loyal and happy customers for generations to come!

April 19, 2015

SALESPERSONNEL have been hired. We will likely be hiring more in the next few weeks, but there are four committed as of now. Yesterday our first salesman, Ryan, started. We had quite a few “lot ups” as we call them, so it was good for him to see ‘a day in the life,’ so to speak. Thank you to all those who came by to take a look at and test drive our new inventory. We are dealer trading for one vehicle, which we hope will lead to our second sale early this week. Please continue to bear with us as we fully stock the lot with new and used vehicles.

WARRANTY WORK should begin this week, as the manufacturer parts should be arriving. It is crazy how long these things can take, and makes me truly appreciate each job role in our dealership. Our wonderful service manager and technicians have been hard at work, to become fully GM trained to do the labor. We will likely need an additional certified GM technician as we grow. PLEASE INQUIRE IF YOU ARE INTERESTED. Very soon our service department will double with work, and we will staff gradually to ensure maximum labor hours for all. A significant aspect to the holdup has been the lack of a committed Parts Manager. While we have sought out referrals, they were unable to see our future vision.

PEOPLE, PROCESSES, PAY PLANS…In my opinion, this is the key to any successful business. You must hire the right people that you can trust, and are capable of executing their job duties. You must define processes to ensure completion and accuracy of transactions. You must put pay plans in effect, which reward your team of their performance goals. I hope all our employees today and in the future, see the big picture of our future. Those who take a leap of faith with us, will inevitably be rewarded. My father has always provided excellent advice, and it hold true in these moments of staffing our dealership. “Sometimes you have to take a half of a step back, to take a big step forward.”

INQUIRIES on our website are at an all-time high. I truly appreciate all those who have inquired about positions and creating business relationships. If I haven’t gotten back with you, I will. I am trying to find my daily routine of handling daily dealership operations, GM meetings, job interviews, responding to inquiries, and blogging. As you can see…I am falling behind.

CRAWFORDSVILLE IS A VERY UNIQUE COMMINTY, I am finding. March 27th, my father and I had an advertising meeting. They were reviewing the community statistics to allocate different mediums of advertisement. In my father’s 30+ years of experience, as well as the entire advertising agency, we had never seen statistics such as these. Can you believe, of the adult population of 18+ who are full time residents and live within 15 miles of Crawfordsville, the gender ratio is 67% female to 33% male? We were floored to hear this! Oh and by the way, what would you guess to be the number one cable network channel? It was not the typical ESPN, Fox News, or other standard stations. Would you believe that the number one cable channel is The Hallmark Channel?

THE CORRELATION of this demographic was definitely apparent, when we held our informal “meet & greet/staffing day.” There were easily 3 women to every one man, which may result in a noticeable presence of female staff at Christi Hubler Chevrolet. This was truly unexpected, but I am excited to see this in the automotive industry! In total, we have 5-6 additions to our team, which have already accepted positions. Some of these, we hope to promote in the next few months as we train and grow our staff! We found Ryan and Brittney, which will be our first sales representatives. Yesterday, we hired a young man named Austin, who is also excited for a sales opportunity. Linda came to our meet & greet, and has been promoted as our controller, as Pat is expecting to retire. Renee starts Monday as a service writer, and is excited to be back at the dealership. Every one of these team members, have expressed that they are “excited to assist” wherever necessary (that is the type of employee who gets our vision). We thank all of our employees, and have high hopes for the future of Christi Hubler Chevrolet.

AGAIN, THANK YOU CRAWFORDSVILLE! We have had an overwhelming amount of support. From community event invites, to “welcome to the community” arrangements, to “you go girl” Facebook and email messages, to local businesses offering their services, to customers “holding off” to buy or service their vehicle locally, to people stopping by to introduce themselves…My father and I thank you all so much, and continue to look forward to building relationships with all these amazing and supportive people!

THANK YOU CRAWFORDSVILLE! Here is an update on our status (part 1)…

MY, HOW TIME FLIES! I have been meaning to write an update for about a week now, but I guess better late than never. Right? As of today, we officially have 7 cars on the lot. Our dealer management system has switched hands, and we are officially Christi Hubler Chevrolet! There are a few bugs we are working through to make all the operations flow normally, but all should be ironed out by the end of the week. We would love the community to continue their servicing needs at our dealership. While everyone is enrolled in the extensive GM training, we are still concentrated on what is most important…our customers service needs. While the customer service work may seem pretty typical as you visit, behind the scenes we are training and working to the max! This is allowing us a minor income stream as we launch warranty services and new car deliveries. I know service has slowed a bit with the unknown transition, but we GREATLY appreciate those continuing to service their vehicles with us.

THE SAM HORNER LOYALTY card that most are familiar with, will be honored a bit differently moving forward. We would like to extend a 10% discount to all those loyal customers. It would be detrimental for us to give that tenth service free, without ever having the first nine paid for. Our service manager, Steve Smith, has been a great asset to the community and to us. Please continue to embrace this wonderful man, as he executes some of the necessary changes moving forward. There have been a lot of “open credit accounts” that we will need to cut back on. I am hopeful all those loyal business accounts will continue to service with us and understand our need currently, for customer pay income without additional liabilities.

CHC’s LIFETIME CUSTOMER CARE will be launched upon our first vehicle sale. Our new vehicle customers will be rewarded with a 10 year or 150,000 mile powertrain warranty coverage. They will also have 36 months or 36,000 miles of their maintenance paid for. The cost implementation to me, the dealer, is still being factored. However, I am hopeful these rewards will keep customers coming back to us for years to come. Standing behind our GM product and giving our customers the ultimate experience, is what sets us apart from the rest. I encourage future customers to find this unique rewards program, and become a CUSTOMER FOR LIFE.

FROM RECENT ONLINE INQUIRIES, we have made some very exciting hires. I look forward to introducing these individuals as members of our team forthcoming. We are still seeking additional sales personnel, and possibly a parts manager (I should know more tomorrow). We have accepted offers that I am ecstatic to have on our team. If you are looking for an excellent company to work for, please come in and apply. We have implemented a company hierarchy with multiple promotion opportunities as a permanent structure to our business model. I feel this is an area in a “typical” dealership atmosphere that is lacking. While we are just one small dealership today, “the sky is the limit” for what our company may build toward tomorrow. It is possible, that the team we create today will be the management staff of the future. I encourage you to stop on by and apply!

A SEMI GRAND OPENING will be scheduled and communicated in the next couple weeks. I am hopeful that we should be fully operational, with sales and service work, by end of business next week. We will announce an invitation to our first grand opening very shortly. We hope the community will embrace our opening as an introduction, of what is to come. Please continue to email, call, and stop by as we prepare to launch our business.

THANK YOU all so much. I feel very overwhelmed and extremely inspired by all the contacts that have been made in just a few short weeks. I want to especially thank the local realtor, Greg Morrison, for all of his hard work during this process. We ran into many road blocks along this journey; from landlocked properties, to unwilling sellers, to ALTA surveys, to unsupported GM sites…I want to thank you Greg for all the sleepless nights we all must have spent, trying to iron out the details. After almost two complete weeks at the dealership, I couldn’t be more confident and inspired that GM selected the perfect location for Christi Hubler Chevrolet. THANK YOU AGAIN CRAWFRDSVILLE FOR ALL THE CONTINUED SUPPORT!

I am so blessed, and can’t wait to see what this next year will bring. I realize I must get my beauty sleep, as I have allowed myself a seven and a half hour window for wedding dress shopping in the morning.
